Project summary:

Project Summary: I will be working with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, also known as Bacterial Spot, on pepper.  My project includes race typing a collection of old and new X. campestris isolates from 2007-2009 and mapping them to see a state-wide distribution of past and present isolates.  With this, I am trying to develop a new method to determine XCV race by means of multiplex PCR with respect to the AvrBs gene’s rather then the conventional inoculation of the differential lines.  I will also be evaluating the copper sensitivity and tolerance of the XCV isolates as well as developing and comparing PCR based tests vs. conventional copper media based plating techniques.  I will also be monitoring the disease onset of bacterial spot and looking at the duration of onset and if race or host cultivars are a factor.
