PATH 8000 - Field Plant Pathology

Four day long field trip to various parts of the state to see and collect examples of plant diseases in the field on economically important crops in Georgia.
Non-Traditional Format: The student will spend four days in the field examining and collecting diseased plants in various parts of Georgia and surrounding states.

Instructor - Phil Brannen
Credit Hours - 1 ( Repeatable for maximum 2 hours credit)
Course Offered - summer / fall semesters

Prerequisite:

PATH 3530-3530L

Objectives:

PATH 8000 is designed for graduate students in plant pathology, horticulture, entomology, crop and soil sciences, and related disciplines with an interest in applied plant pathology and related careers. It will expose students to plant diseases of commercial importance (horticultural and/or agronomic) in the field. This will include observation at university, USDA, APHIS, industry, and other sites. The course will also expose students to career fields in which plant pathology skills are needed. Field observations will be reinforced with laboratory microscopic investigation of pathogens. This will be accomplished through a three-day field tour, followed by a half-day lab session. This is an S/U course; a satisfactory rating will require full participation in the tour and lab.

Topical Outline:

Day 1-3: Travel to field sites (variable) to review plant diseases and epidemic conditions.
Day 4: Four-hour lab to microscopically review pathogens from diseases observed in the field.

University Honor Code and Academic Honesty Policy:

This is a cooperative course in which students interact with each other to learn. Therefore, any assistance, whether from the instructor or other students is authorized. No formal test is given.
