ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Ph.D. in Botany (Mycology), University of Texas, 1969
B.S. in Botany, McNeese State University, 1966

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND CURRENT EFFORTS

Work in my laboratory focuses upon the biology of plant pathogenic fungi and their interactions with susceptible and resistant hosts. Specifically, I am interested in 1) morphological features of fungal spores and the significance of these features in pathogenesis, 2) cytological and nuclear events associated with spore germination and development of germ tubes on host and artificial surfaces, 3) mechanisms of adhesion of germ tubes to surfaces, 4) appressorium differentiation and subsequent direct or indirect penetration of epidermal surfaces and 5) intracellular or intercellular growth of pathogens including the formation of haustoria. The nature of these studies requires extensive use of light and electron microscopic techniques. Additionally, various cytochemical procedures including the use of gold-labeled lectins, enzymes and antibodies are utilized. Because I am interested in characterizing the diversity of interactions between different types of plant pathogenic fungi and their hosts, my students and I have studied a wide range of fungal pathogens. However, virtually all pathogens studied in my lab attack hosts of economic significance in Georgia.
