The vision of the Department of Plant Pathology is to provide leadership in the development and implementation of innovative research, teaching and extension programs in the science of plant pathology as it relates to plant disease agents, plant health, and the environment.

The mission of the Department of Plant Pathology is to generate and disseminate knowledge about the basic, developmental, and applied biology of plant diseases, the interaction of plant disease agents with host plants and their environment, and to apply this knowledge for the environmentally compatible, effective and economic management of plant diseases caused by biotic and abiotic agents for the benefit of our clientele in the state, the nation and the world.

Facilities

The Department of Plant Pathology has fully equipped laboratories and instrumentation necessary for biological and molecular biology research at all three campuses. Personal computers, assorted hardware and software, and terminals with internet access and access to the University mainframes are readily available to students. Many well-maintained plant growth chambers, greenhouses, and incubators are also available. In addition, experimental farms for field studies are at each campus and at branch stations throughout Georgia.

Other facilities available to students are an excellent science library, which offers rapid literature search services; a complete central electron microscope laboratory; molecular biology resources, soil and pesticide analysis services; and machine and electronics shops. In addition to cooperative research opportunities in other University and Experiment Station departments, students can collaborate with scientists in several on-campus federal laboratories.
