The paloverde trees at the Coastal Botanical Gardens are completely covered in blossoms. The flowers have five yellow petals, but one petal has a honey gland and turns an orange-red, giving the blooms a distinctive bicolored look. The flowers are swarming with pollinators of all types.
The 'Wedding Dance' amaryllis is a hybrid amaryllis that produces stalks that exhibit several enormous, pristine white flowers measuring up to 7 inches in width. CAES News

Gardeners all over the country can enjoy the amaryllis, whether in the landscape or as one of the most-loved Christmas plants forced indoors. Outdoors they prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Ours get morning sun and late-afternoon shade. In the landscape, we treat them much like narcissi. We will deadhead flowers and leave foliage until it wants to go dormant.
Jesse Lafian, a fourth-year horticulture student, designed a patent-pending moisture sensor that is the centerpiece of his startup, Reservoir LLC. Lafian won UGA's Next Top Entrepreneur, with a prize of $10,000 to put toward his company. CAES News

The key to maximizing water conservation and a lush landscape is an informed use of water. University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) horticulture student Jesse Lafian developed a web-connected soil moisture sensor to help landscape management companies monitor irrigation and enable them to use water wisely.
University of Georgia scientist Peggy Ozias-Akins, a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences professor of horticulture on the UGA Tifton Campus, applies advanced biotechnology and molecular biology tools — tools she developed herself in some cases — to improve crops like peanuts. University of Georgia Professor Peggy Ozias-Akins has been awarded the title of Distinguished Research Professor, an honor awarded to UGA faculty recognized internationally for their contributions to knowledge and whose work promises to foster continued creativity in their discipline. She and her colleagues have created new and improved plant varieties that are higher yielding, more disease resistant, more nutritious or have greater ornamental value.

‘South Pacific Sipper’ might best be described as a fancy hibiscus, and indeed it is. It is also one born to grow and produces flowers so large they defy logic. They are somewhat ruffled and though called “double,” they open up in a most exotic fashion. Though it sounds crazy, it is one of those plants that will have you taking photos of it every day because you think today’s blooms are even prettier than the blooms from the day before.
Emperor's candlestick partners well with the spicy jatropha or Jatropha integerrima. Another terrific combination could include Cuphea 'Vermillionaire.' Grow it close to the back of your border as it does grow large, up to 8 feet tall, with compound leaves that stretch out 3 feet in each direction. CAES News

Emperor’s candlestick is considered a shrub in the tropics, yet growing wild, they appear dwarfed in comparison to how they look in landscapes. Although the plant is seen in gardens as a beautiful flower, it is a valuable medicinal plant in developing countries.
